Florida State University’s College of Medicine was designed as a community-based medical school. The students spend their first two years taking basic science courses on the FSU campus in Tallahassee and are then assigned to one of the six regional medical school campuses for their third- and fourth-year clinical training. Upon reaching the third year of study, students begin intensive clinical training. The Sarasota Regional Campus hosts 20 third-year students, and 20 fourth-year students, as well as 10 Physician Assistant students each year. These students learn in an apprenticeship model where they are paired one on one with area physicians. Their clinical training program extends into hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, private clinics and other outpatient settings. Clerkship directors from the Sarasota area direct the students' rotations in: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, geriatrics, psychiatry and emergency medicine. We have over 350 community physicians that serve as clerkship faculty to our students. Over 200 students have graduated from the Sarasota campus. Our hope, is that they will return to Sarasota to work at our hospitals and clinics, and open practices here in town.
